Untold Stories 7:

One Cross Each

“Crucifixion?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Out of the door, line on the left, one cross each!”

This is just one of many literally divine snatches of dialogue from Monty Python’s hilariously funny and wise film “The Life of Brian.”

The line comes to me every time I pass through the Old City of Jerusalem on a Friday afternoon. This is the day when numerous groups of Christian pilgrims carry their wooden crosses all the way along the Via Dolorosa – Jesus’ way of suffering – finally stacking them all in a nice neat pile at the entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

I cannot help but see before me that troupe of crazy British actors on their way to Golgotha to be crucified. And then, once firmly nailed to the cross, singing “Always look on the bright side of life.”

Faith and the divine comedy are sometimes not far apart.
